Developer Survey: Data Item Group Editor Duplicate Option
Hey developers - we're looking for your feedback on some new features we're considering in 8.1.
We're running through some of the features being added to 8.1 on the admin side. All of these ERs are in the Data Item Group Editor (aside from the item Chick noted on Detect and Repair).
After going through some of the items, I was thinking about a "Duplicate" option. While this can sometimes be handled with views, it is sometimes useful to create a new data item that is identical to an existing data item only it uses a different alias.
A scenario for this would be the following:
An INVOICES table has a CUSTOMER and a SHIPTO field that both correspond to entries in the Customer File.
In these scenarios, the Customer Name field is copied and renamed Shipto Name using the same Customer file but with a different alias.
Another scenario might be a LOOKUP table that acts as a lookup for multiple fields in the system. Since a JOIN can only link to a single alias, the lookup table might use multiple aliases to allow for multiple field lookups.
(if you don't follow the scenario, then don't read further and ask for clarification - it's important to understand the scenario to understand the feature)
If the Data Item Group Editor allowed allowed you to Duplicate an option, would it be better for it to prompt you right up front for a new alias? (in effect making the option Copy to Different Alias) Or just to create a copy and then let you (the developer) make the change?
Take our survey - at the top of the forum pages and let us know - or comment here.
Thanks
